Between travel, coffee and backyard gardening, Dr. Mary Ann Allston finds most joy in multi-generational patient care

By Staff reports on September 25, 2025

Dr. Mary Ann Allston has always dreamed of being a physician. Her inquisitive personality and relational mindset make her well-suited to provide trusted, compassionate care to those around her.

“I couldn’t ever think of doing anything else. It’s what I’m supposed to be doing,” she said, remembering early memories of fifth grade when she would tell everyone she was going to be a doctor.

Now a new physician with Medical Group of the Carolinas – Family Medicine – Boiling Springs, Dr. Allston is happily accepting new patients.

“It’s so interesting to have the privilege of seeing into people’s lives, to have an intimate relationship with them and have that level of trust,” Dr. Allston said.

Dr. Allston thinks of family medicine much like conducting an investigation.

“You feel like an investigator in a lot of ways,” she said. “You’re putting patterns together and figuring out a diagnosis and considering family history. It’s all very interesting.”

Trust is key to building patient relationships and delivering the best possible care, she said.

“The patient has to trust that I’m going to be kind and caring and as unbiased as humanly possible, and I’ll expect them to be honest with me,” she said. “I know not everything is something you want to tell another human, but it’s important to be straightforward so we can have an honest, open relationship.”

Dr. Allston went to medical school at the University of Pecs in Hungary before completing a family medicine residency program with Prisma Health in Greer. She also completed a hospitalist fellowship through Prisma in July.

Seeing the world

Traveling to Hungary for medical school was her first trip outside of the United States. She now combines her love of travel with medical mission work in Honduras and other remote areas.

As a coffee lover who roasts her own beans at home, she likes to get them straight from the source when visiting places like Colombia, Guatemala and the Caribbean.

When not traveling or seeing patients, Dr. Allston enjoys the outdoors.

“If I’m hanging out at the house, I’ll be barefoot, outside and playing in the garden,” she said.

As a family medicine physician, her dream of caring for others’ health needs has come to fruition.

“My goal is to have a have great-grandma and grandpa as patients all the way down to babies of the same family,” she said. “I just like helping people.”
