Returning to her roots: Dr. Stephanie Walker brings decades of experience to Five Forks family medicine

By staff reports on July 31, 2026

After spending much of the last decade teaching the next generation of physicians, Dr. Stephanie Walker is returning to what first inspired her to pursue medicine: caring for patients and building lasting relationships.

Dr. Walker is now accepting new patients at Medical Group of the Carolinas – Family Medicine – Five Forks, bringing with her more than 25 years of medical experience that spans private practice, hospital medicine, physician leadership and medical education.

“It felt like it was time to come back to the community and see patients,” Dr. Walker said. “The more you teach, the more your patient-facing time dwindles. This was an opportunity to spend more time cultivating relationships with my patients.”

For Dr. Walker, the move represents a full-circle moment.

A family medicine physician by training, she practiced for a decade in Florida, including owning her own practice, before eventually serving as a hospitalist and later helping train resident physicians in South Carolina.

Most recently, she served in leadership and educational roles, helping build the culture and curriculum of a growing residency program.

Now, she is returning to the work she loves most.

“It's going back to my roots,” she said.

Those roots trace back to Florida’s Space Coast, where Dr. Walker once imagined a very different future. Inspired by her surroundings, she planned to become an engineer. But during high school, a life-changing experience altered her path.

When her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 81, Dr. Walker was troubled by the outlook her grandmother was given and her medical experience. That less-than-satisfying experience helped motivate Dr. Walker to get into the medical field and be a positive force.

“That was the turning point,” Dr. Walker said. “That was the moment I decided I was going to med school.”

Her grandmother recovered, lived to age 92 and had the opportunity to watch Dr. Walker graduate from medical school.

Today, Dr. Walker said the relationships she forms with patients remain the most rewarding part of her career.

“It’s watching people grow through different stages of life,” she said. “Sometimes you care for multiple generations of the same family. You grow old with them.”

While she enjoys caring for a variety of patients, Dr. Walker has particular expertise in adult medicine, including chronic disease management for conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Her years as a hospitalist also give her a unique perspective on complex medical conditions and navigating care through every stage of a patient’s health journey.

“I want to treat people the way I would want my family to be treated at the doctor’s office,” she said. “I’ve done a lot of things over the course of my career, and I’ve seen a little bit of everything.”

Outside of medicine, Dr. Walker is embracing a new chapter as a recent empty nester. She enjoys travel and is discovering new interests after years devoted to raising a family and building her career.

And after a career spent teaching others how to care for patients, she is excited to once again focus on caring for her own.
