This new year, come ‘be a part of the family’ with fitness classes
With a new year comes new goals and resolutions, so there is no time like the present to make physical fitness a priority as you head into 2024.
Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s Sports Medicine Institute – Sports Performance (SMI) is celebrating by offering a new fitness class for all skill levels and abilities done in a community setting to keep participants engaged and motivated.
Fit Athletic Movements, or FAM, is now offered at 6 a.m., 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. every weekday at The Star Center off Warren H. Abernathy Highway in Spartanburg County.
A trained coach from the Sports Medicine Institute leads participants through a high-paced, rotation of exercises focused on mobility, strength and endurance.
This 50-minute class is designed to get people moving and exercising in under one hour; making it easy and convenient to get a workout in without taking away from the rest of the day.
“It is a time-based program that you can do at your own pace. This services a wide variety of athletic abilities from the super high-level athlete to a beginner,” said Gary Hazelwood, sports performance supervisor for the Sports Medicine Institute. “And when the time is up for that exercise, we switch to the next thing. No one is going to be left behind.”
SMI is offering a free one-week trial to try out the FAM classes before committing. Those who choose to sign up during that first week get 50% off their first month. Classes are $99 per month. And as part of a sale now through Jan. 31, participants who sign up for a year of FAM will get two months free.
You can also download the MySMI app on the App Store or Google Play to create a profile and track your workouts and sign up for classes. You can also book your free trial week through the app.
Hazelwood said the key when beginning a new fitness routine is to involve others for accountability.
“A lot of people are trying to make new decisions and new goals and forge a new path on fitness,” Hazelwood said. “Most people don’t realize if they do it with other people that the success rate is through the roof.”
FAM classes are structured in such a way to make every skill level fit in and feel connected.
“It’s hard to have a 20-year-old athlete with maybe somebody who’s a grandmother, but with the way we’ve structured it, they can work out together and both feel like they’re a part of the family,” Hazelwood said.
