Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has many events to choose from, with something for everyone from childbirth preparation classes to cooking instruction and heart health screenings. Check out what we offer and sign up today.

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, each Wednesday for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Slips, trips and falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls. 

Registration is not required. Please join us at any session that fits your schedule. 

Beginners are welcome. You must be able to get on and off the floor without assistance.

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through 6 months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.  

 

Lung Cancer Screening: Who is eligible?

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham

No fooling, early detection saves lives.

Screenings for high-risk individuals using a low-dose CT (LDCT) scan can detect lung cancer in its early, most treatable stages and significantly increase the chances of survival.

Please join us for lunch to hear Kara Grant, lung cancer screening navigator with Gibbs Cancer Center, share the benefits of early detection, identify who is considered high-risk for lung cancer, outline screening criteria and explain how to begin the referral process for those who meet eligibility standards.

Cleveland Park Events Center 

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to remain independent. 

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Anyone over the age of 50, including those who use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, at the Gibbs Cancer Center Conference room in Spartanburg to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors. Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, a mat and block will be provided for you to use. 

Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees.

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program, we are excited to offer our community an Infant CPR class option.

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification Infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.

Available to cancer survivors at no charge, the Survivorship Program offers semi-monthly workout sessions that will focus on helping you build strength and improve your cardiovascular health through a combination of exercises. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting out, our experienced trainers will guide you every step of the way. Join us for this opportunity to boost your overall health and well-being.

These sessions will be held by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's Sports Medicine Institute.

Looking for others on their journey to eating healthier? Do you need some inspiration or want to try new dishes? Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month.

There is no need to register. Please adhere to WFPBN guidelines (no meat, dairy or oil and minimal added sugar and salt) and bring the recipe to share. Reach out to Lori at lboyd2@srhs.com if you'd like some recommendations about where to find recipe ideas. 

 

Head and Neck Cancer Support Group-Hybrid

Have you recently been diagnosed with head and neck cancer? Are you undergoing treatment or are a survivor?

Join us at Gibbs-Pelham for our head and neck cancer support group. The group is associated with the Support for Oral and Head and Neck Cancer organization. This group is open to anyone at any stage of diagnosis or survivorship.

Meetings will have in-person and virtual options available.

Prepared Parents: Infant Care

Spartanburg Medical Center

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class.

 

Spartanburg Prostate Cancer Support Group

Monday, April 13, 6 to 7 p.m.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg or online 

Join us at Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg or online, for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through.

At Gibbs Cancer Center, we consider survivorship to start the day you are diagnosed and begin your cancer journey.

 

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid

Tuesday, April 14, 5:45 to 7 p.m.

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg or online

The Survivorship Program offers a unique, monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis.

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg.

This event will be held in person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in person, a virtual attendance option is available for this event.

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack.

Pelham Medical Center partners with Eastside YMCA to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension.

Cardiac Connection-Survive-Don’t Drive 

Wednesday, April 15, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Heart Wellness Center 

Please join us for this special Cardiac Connection event.

Laurie Matthews, cardiology outreach nurse, will discuss the importance of recognizing early signs of a heart attack (EHAC) and stroke (BEFAST).

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's EMS will be onsite for ambulance tours to promote the importance of calling 911 immediately and not driving to the Emergency Room.

Registration is required. Lunch will be provided.

Cardiac Connection is a welcoming and interactive opportunity to stay motivated, informed and connected during your heart wellness journey. This event is open to all who want to learn more about stroke and heart attack prevention.

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents 

Wednesday, April 15, 4 to 5 p.m.

Online

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. This class will share information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight.

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. This is an online event. You will receive the link to the event after you register.

 

Weight Loss Surgery-Online Support Group  

Thursday, April 16, noon to 1 p.m.

Online 

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.  

 

AARP Smart Driver Course

Saturday, April 18, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham

The nation’s first refresher course is specifically designed for drivers 50 and older.

In many states, drivers may benefit from a discount on their auto insurance premium upon completing the course. And you will learn something new along the way. In fact, an evaluation of the course found that 97% of participants changed at least one driving habit because of what they learned.

Our Smart Driver online course will help you:

  • Receive a multi-year discount on your auto insurance*
  • Refresh your driving skills and your knowledge of the rules — and hazards — of the road
  • Reduce your chances of receiving a traffic violation or getting into an accident

Course highlights:

  • Research-based safe driving strategies

Just the Ticket

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road.

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations.

This is an online event, and you will receive the link once you have registered.

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle 

Tuesday, April 21, noon to 1 p.m.

Spartanburg Medical Center or online

Join us at noon on the third Tuesday of every month for this hybrid (virtual and in-person) support group. Meetings are designed for 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able. This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams. If you would like to come in person, you must call (864-560-6487) or email Madison (mapate@srhs.com) to reserve your seat in the classroom as space is limited.  If you do not contact us directly, a link to the virtual meeting will be sent the day before through your email.

 

Art Class For Cancer Patients, Survivors and Caregivers

Join us each month for a relaxing, creative art session designed to support emotional well-being and connection. Our art classes offer a welcoming space where cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers can come together, enjoy fellowship, and explore the healing benefits of creative expression.

This program is offered at no charge through Gibbs Cancer Center Survivorship Program.

 

Prostate Cancer Screening

Thursday, April 23, 5:30 to 7 p.m.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham

One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second most common non-skin cancer in the United States. A new case is diagnosed every three minutes, but if caught early enough the 5-year survival rate is 100%.

Do you qualify for this FREE screening?

  • Are you a man age 50-70?
  • Have no primary care doctor?
  • Do you not have insurance?
  • Have you not had a PSA draw in the past year?

If you meet the above criteria, you qualify for this screening. The screening consists of only a blood draw and results are provided in seven to 14 days. Registration is required for this event.

 

Prepared Childbirth eClass

This class provides you with answers to your questions and important information so you can be an active participant in your birth experience. This is an online, self-paced class.

 

After completing this class, you will be able to:

  • Make informed healthcare decisions, from pregnancy through postpartum

  • Identify and communicate your birth preferences with your healthcare team

With a positive focus on the importance of expectant dads being involved right from the start, you will learn how to support your partner through pregnancy and birth, as well as survival tips for those first few sleep-deprived months with a newborn. Integrated throughout the class are fun activities and video clips that share the relatable stories of real dads and advice from a fatherhood expert. Allow about three hours to complete.
