Volunteers at Spartanburg Regional love to love others

By Staff reports on April 17, 2026

When Doug Kuykendall’s wife, Brenda, succumbed to a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer in 2024, Kuykendall’s first instinct was to give back to Gibbs Cancer Center, which had cared for her so well during her medical journey.

He immediately began volunteering in the Infusion Center at Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg where he assists patients with wayfinding and serves as an extra hand for anything that comes up.

“I went there to help people, and it has more so helped me,” Kuykendall said. “I love it. I love the people I work with and I love the patients. I love every part of it, and I want to do it as long as you can.”

He’s one of many who feel called to give their time in service to others. Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s more than 250 volunteers enjoyed a time of laughter and love during their annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon at Spartanburg’s Piedmont Club on April 13.

System leaders served the volunteers lunch, handed out door prizes and gave special gifts as an opportunity to thank those who enhance quality patient care through selfless acts of service.

“We appreciate what you do for us day in and day out. It is from the kindness of your heart that you offer your love at our hospital system, and we can’t thank you enough,” said Phil Feisal, Spartanburg Regional’s System Chief Operating Officer-Hospital Group and Executive Vice President.

Volunteers serve in various capacities across hospital campuses, including clerical work, patient navigation, delivering equipment, donating items for patient needs, crafting handmade items, and collaborating with local organizations.

Kuykendall is in his second year of volunteering with Spartanburg Regional and has inspired others to join the ranks. He brought his fellow church member, Kevin Blanks, to the luncheon this year.

Blanks began volunteering at Spartanburg Medical Center – Mary Black Campus helping patients as they are admitted and discharged from the hospital.

“I try to make it more enjoyable for people and take their mind off of things and make them smile,” Blanks said. “When Doug would talk about what he does and the smile he had on his face about it, that’s what I was looking for.”
