Topping out ceremony marks milestone for new Union Medical Center project

By Staff reports on March 1, 2024

Construction of the new Union Medical Center reached a milestone on Thursday as workers placed the final structural beam atop the hospital’s steel frame – an observance known as topping out.

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System leaders and associates applauded as a large crane raised the massive steel beam into place. For more than a month, the piece had resided in the current Union Medical Center lobby, where associates and community members signed the historic item. On Wednesday, workers delivered the beam to the construction site in preparation for Thursday’s event.

“Today’s topping out ceremony affords us an opportunity to reflect on the progress made on this site while recognizing the great work achieved by the construction team,” said Paul Newhouse, president of Union Medical Center. “As the beam is lifted into place, you can see the new Union Medical Center take shape and imagine generations of families being cared for here. As a healthcare system, we are honored to be a part of this community, and we are proud of the progress we are making here together.”

Located along Highway 176 across from Union Industrial Park and four miles from the current hospital, the new three-story, 99,600-square-foot Union Medical Center puts the patient first and is designed with a focus on accessibility and high-quality care.

Site preparation for the new $55 million facility began in spring 2023, with building completion expected in 2025.

The new campus will offer an array of essential medical services, including:

  • Emergency care
  • Imaging
  • Gibbs Cancer Center infusion services
  • Inpatient care
  • Lab
  • Bearden-Josey Center for Breast Health mammography services
  • Outpatient services
  • Pharmacy
  • Primary care
