Spartanburg Regional surgeon first in S.C. to perform total knee arthroplasty with new robotics-assisted device
A Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System physician has become the first surgeon in South Carolina to perform total knee arthroplasty using an innovative robotic-assisted joint replacement system.
Dr. Frank Armocida, a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, began operating with Stryker’s New Mako Robotic Power System at Pelham Medical Center earlier this year.
A total knee arthroplasty is a joint replacement surgery in which damaged bone and cartilage in a joint are removed and replaced with an artificial implant.
“Being part of this milestone is incredibly exciting,” Dr. Armocida said. “Stryker’s new Mako Robotic Power platform builds on years of proven success and offers remarkable enhancements in accuracy, efficiency and personalization for each patient. It’s an honor to bring this level of innovation to our community.”
The Mako RPS uses image-free intraoperative planning and a robotically enabled saw with Stryker’s patented active adjustment technology. This technology responds to the surgeon’s hand movements to guide the saw and stay aligned with the surgical plan to improve overall accuracy. Patients benefit from smaller incisions, more accurate implant placement and potentially faster recovery times.
Pelham Medical Center President Tony Kouskolekas said this accomplishment reflects the extraordinary talent of our surgeons and the forward‑thinking vision of our organization.
“Introducing the Mako Robotic Power system reinforces our commitment to providing world-class surgical care,” Kouskolekas said. “We are proud to be leading the way – not just in South Carolina, but on the global stage.”
Dr. Armocida, who specializes in the treatment of arthritic and degenerative conditions of the hip, knee and shoulder, was also instrumental in helping Pelham Medical Center become the first Orthopedic Center of Excellence in the Carolinas.
A DNV designation that recognizes an organization as a demonstrated leader in the safe delivery of services, the Orthopedic Center of Excellence honor is obtained by achieving advanced certification in at least three orthopedic programs. Pelham Medical Center earned the designation for spine surgery, hip and knee replacement, and foot and ankle surgery.
Erin Masters, Pelham Medical Center’s orthopedic & spine clinical coordinator, said the implementation of this new technology reinforces the hospital’s vision of being the most trusted partner in orthopedic services and improving the quality of life for the patients we serve.
"An orthopedic center of excellence isn't just about specialization – it's about delivering safer, faster, and more coordinated care that improves patient outcomes and experiences,” Masters said. “I'm thankful to work alongside doctors like Dr. Armocida every day who are making a meaningful impact on the community we serve.
