From local resident to local physician: Dr. Asrar Alimohamed returns home

By Staff reports on October 2, 2026

After years of medical training, Dr. Asrar Alimohamed has come full circle, returning to Spartanburg to care for the community that helped raise him.

He recently joined Medical Group of the Carolinas — Internal Medicine — Westside, bringing with him a passion for patient-centered care, a strong foundation in internal medicine and a deep appreciation for the place he has always considered home.

Born and raised in Spartanburg, Dr. Alimohamed spent his childhood attending Spartanburg County School District Six schools before graduating from Wofford College in 2018.

He went on to earn his medical degree from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine and completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. While his training took him beyond South Carolina, his long-term goal never changed.

"I always wanted to come back to the Spartanburg area," he said. "I wanted to serve the community that helped shape me."

Returning home means reconnecting with the people and places that influenced his journey. His parents and extended family still live in the area, and he looks forward to once again enjoying local favorites like golfing, fishing on Lake Bowen and spending time outdoors.

What excites him most is building relationships with patients. Working alongside physicians who balanced research and clinical practice, he witnessed how scientific discoveries translated into better outcomes for patients. The experience inspired him to pursue medicine and, ultimately, a career focused on caring for people face to face.

At MGC — Internal Medicine — Westside, Dr. Alimohamed is committed to a patient-centered approach that emphasizes partnership, communication and quality of life.

"My goal is to understand what's important to each patient," he explained. "We work together to create a treatment plan that supports their health goals and their life goals."

Rather than focusing solely on medications or test results, he strives to develop personalized care plans that fit each patient's individual needs and priorities. He believes some of the most meaningful moments in medicine come from helping patients maintain the health and independence needed to enjoy time with their children, grandchildren and loved ones.

As an internal medicine physician, Dr. Alimohamed enjoys caring for adults with a broad range of health concerns. He has a particular interest in managing common chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol and obesity, and helping patients make sustainable changes that improve their long-term health and well-being.

For him, the opportunity to practice medicine in his hometown represents a true full-circle moment, one

that allows him to give back to the community that has always felt like home.
