Inspired by grandmother’s quality care from doctors,
Dr. Michael Schmidt is ready to form similar patient bonds
Dr. Michael Schmidt was only 10 years old when his grandmother’s primary care physician left a lasting impression on him.
His grandmother lived with them, so he often joined her at doctor’s appointments. He said he’ll never forget the way his grandmother deeply valued and trusted her doctor.
“The connections she made with some of her physicians were very impactful,” Dr. Schmidt said. “The way she spoke of that individual is something that impacted me at a very young age. I wanted to be that person.”
Dr. Schmidt is now accepting new patients at Medical Group of the Carolinas – Internal Medicine – Greer.
Dr. Schmidt grew up in Myrtle Beach and later fell in love with the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills while completing his undergraduate degree at Clemson University.
He stayed in Greenville for medical school and after completing a residency program at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., he was excited for the opportunity to move back to the Upstate.
Building lasting relationships with patients is one of his passions.
“I appreciate the connections you make with internal medicine, seeing the longitude of providing health care for patients on a year-to-year or month to month basis, whether those healthcare needs are acute or chronic or involve complex diseases,” Dr. Schmidt said.
He wants his patients to know that he values them as people and will take the time to learn about their own hobbies, passions and interests, which are connected to their lifestyles and healthcare journeys.
“I want to know what’s important to them,” he said. “You can have a laundry list of questions you feel are important as a physician, but you might miss some of those other things that are still very important.”
His wife is originally from the Upstate, and they now reside in Greer, where they are embracing life as new parents while raising their 18-month-old son.
“We love the community-based feeling of the Upstate, and there being so many different opportunities for families here,” he said.
When not taking care of patients, or parenting their son, he and his wife enjoy the outdoors, traveling, and unwinding during an evening out.
