Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL)

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle. 

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham  

Many senior adults lack suitable digital devices and technical training and support, leaving them without critical information about cybersecurity and staying safe online. 

Pelham Medical Center and St. Francis LifeWise are partnering together with AARP, to bring free digital literacy classes to adults in the community.

Participants who complete all three courses will be entered into a drawing for an Apple iPad and two certificates for a one-hour technology session with Just Call Bill will be given out (thanks to a generous grant provided by Spartanburg Regional Foundation). 

A boxed lunch will be available at 12:45 p.m.

Healthy and Balanced - Oncology Nutrition Support Group 

Tuesday, Sept. 3, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg  

Maintaining a healthy weight and consuming a nutrient-rich diet after the completion of cancer treatment can be challenging. With the proper tools and support, you can find a healthy balance while achieving your weight management goals. 

Join us monthly and work toward being healthy and balanced. Our topic for September will be sleep cognition. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Don't want to leave home to visit your doctor? Don't put your health on hold. A virtual visit with your healthcare provider may be the answer. 

Pelham Medical Center and St. Francis LifeWise are partnering together to offer this overview of telemedicine options. You’ll see what a virtual visit generally looks like plus get advice about how best to prepare for a virtual visit, from questions to ask your doctor to your concerns regarding connectivity, privacy and insurance. 

Learn how you can securely access your health information online, anytime, anywhere using the MyChart Patient Portal. 

A generous grant from the Spartanburg Regional Foundation is providing a take-home, boxed lunch at the completion of the course.

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Senior Action Greenville to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension.

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors.  

Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, a mat and block will be provided for you to use. Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees. 

 

Spartanburg Prostate Cancer Support Group  

Monday, Sept. 9, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

Join us for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

The speaker this month is acupuncturist Dawn Garrison, L.Ac., DAOM, who will discuss how drug-free therapies can help address a wide variety of common ailments and problems.

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer an infant CPR class to our community.  

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.  

 

Breast Cancer Support Group 

Monday, Sept. 9, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to breast cancer patients and survivors at no charge. 

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg. 

 

Music Therapy 

Tuesday, Sept. 10, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Upstate Prostate Cancer Support Group

Join us at Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham or online, every second Tuesday of the month for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through.

Prepared Parents: Infant Care   

Thursday, Sept. 12, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

Join presenter, Warren (“Wren”) Bareiss, PhD and Professor of Communication, University of South Carolina Upstate and Editor‐in‐Chief, Qualitative Research in Medicine & Healthcare for this two part workshop. 

Most researchers conducting health-based research have been trained in quantitative research and writing methods. In contrast, qualitative research and writing methods are often not taught thoroughly, if at all, in graduate medical programs, leaving researchers without skills needed to explore the valuable lessons afforded by qualitative methods. Qualitative research moves deeply into the lives, experiences, beliefs, values and behaviors of patients and caregivers; it  

 

Nature Therapy Walk-Cancer Survivors  

Saturday, Sept. 14, 10 a.m. to noon 

River Birch Trail  

The Survivorship Program offers a quarterly "Trails to Recovery" hiking/walking opportunity for nature therapy. This unique offering is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

This series is hosted in partnership with The Local Hiker, a retail hiking and adventure store located downtown Spartanburg, SC. 

The next nature walk/hike will take place at River Birch Trail in Spartanburg, located off Sydnor Road. This trail is great for all physical activity skill levels, beginners included, as it is a paved path that runs alongside the river. Our experienced session leaders will provide therapeutic engagement through education about the surrounding ecosystem as well as offering meditative, journaling and mindfulness activities. 

Studies have shown that spending time in nature has therapeutic effects on cancer survivors, including reducing stress levels, improved immune function and increased overall well-being. 

 

Baby Lounge 

Thursday, Sept. 19, 1:30 to 3 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Baby Lounge is a free support group for all families and babies to join. It is a safe space to discuss topics of interest, have questions answered by healthcare professionals and to receive support for you and your family.  

We have an area for you to weigh your baby should you wish, an area to self-take your blood pressure and we have snacks/waters. We would love to have you join in our informal discussions, whether you are expecting or have delivered. 

We will be meeting at Spartanburg Medical Center- 2Tower Classroom during the Library's construction months. You will enter the hospital via main entrance, take elevator A to the 2nd floor and take a left off the elevator where you will see 2Tower classroom on your left. We hope to see you there. 

 

Prostate Cancer Screening 

Thursday, Sept. 19, 5 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg  

One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second most common non-skin cancer in the United States. A new case is diagnosed every three minutes, but if caught early enough the five-year survival rate is 100%. 

Do you qualify for this screening? 

  • Are you a man aged 50-70 
  • Have no primary care doctor 
  • Do not have insurance 
  • Have not had a PSA draw in the past year 

If you meet the above criteria, you qualify for this screening. The screening consists of only a blood draw and results are provided in seven-14 days. Registration is required for this event.

Falls Prevention Workshop

Falls are a leading cause of injury among older adults, but many falls can be prevented. 

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month, which is an opportunity to assess your risk of falling and take steps to keep you safe. Participate in activities and educational stations including: 

  • Falls risk screening 
  • Creating a safer home environment 
  • Dietitians 
  • Mobility planning tool 
  • Medication fact sheets 
  • Pelvic floor therapy 
  • Walking with medical devices 
  • Strengthening, balance and flexibility exercise demonstrations 
  • Importance of routine checkups and eye exams

Nature Paint-By-Number Art Class Cancer Survivors

The Survivorship Program will be offering monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. 

Join us for nature paint-by-number art class. This session will be hosted by Robin Reif, from Wofford College. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Diabetes Wellness Circle    

Tuesday, Sept. 17, noon to 1 p.m.

Diabetes Wellness Circle is an online and in-person support group that supports, encourages and educates anyone living with diabetes. Everyone is welcome. Meetings consist of 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15 minutes of discussion. Please join the forum and then stay as long as you are able.    

Prepared Breastfeeding  

Tuesday, Sept. 17, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

18th Annual Heart Failure Symposium

Preventing Falls

Did you know that falls are the leading cause of injury among older adults? One out of four adults, 65 and older, fall each year. Join the Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System trauma team, to learn important information on how you can prevent falls. 

 

Cardiac Connection-Fall Prevention  

Wednesday, Sept. 18, noon to 1 p.m. 

Heart Wellness Center  

September brings the first day of fall, which happens to mark the start of Falls Prevention Awareness Week. Join us as Jennifer Dewyea, Physical Therapist, brings her expertise on the topic. We will discuss ways to reducing risk of and preventing falls. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us. 

 

Weight Loss Surgery - Online Support Group    

Thursday, Sept. 19, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online  

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.    

 

Colorful Cooking at Home: Nicaraguan Cuisine

Around the world, food is closely tied to culture. Join us as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by highlighting local dishes from Nicaraguan native Mac Romero. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate, and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be! Join host Registered Dietitian Kerri Stewart from the Joe R. Utley Heart Resource Center each month as she navigates different topics and dishes with the common theme of color.

Just the Ticket

During this comprehensive course offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

 

Zentangle Coasters Art Class-Cancer Survivors 

Tuesday, Sept. 24, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

The Survivorship Program will be offering monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. 

This session will be hosted by Youmi Efurd, from Wofford College, and is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents 

Thursday, Sept. 26, 4 to 5 p.m.

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby.

Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month.
