Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has many events to choose from, with something for everyone from childbirth preparation classes to cooking instruction and heart health screenings. Check out what we offer and sign up today.  
 

Balance and Breathe Yoga

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, each Wednesday for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Slips, trips and falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls.  

Registration is not required. Please join us at any session that fits your schedule.  

Beginners are welcome. You must be able to get on and off the floor without assistance.

Spartanburg Medical Center 

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through six months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.   

 

Low-dose Radiation Therapy for Osteoarthritis 

Wednesday, Oct. 1, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

Medical Group of the Carolinas - Radiation Oncology - Pelham now offers low-dose radiation therapy (LDRT) for osteoarthritis. Low-dose radiation therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment that uses very small doses of radiation to relieve pain and inflammation caused by osteoarthritis (OA). 

During this lunch and learn, Dr. Dan Fried, radiation oncologist, will answer common questions about LDRT, share about other benign conditions that can be treated with LDRT and help determine who should consider this type of treatment.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to remain independent.  

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Anyone over the age of 50, including those who use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, at the Gibbs Cancer Center Conference room in Spartanburg to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors. Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, a mat and block will be provided for you to use.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg  

This free, six-session group offers cancer patients and survivors practical mindfulness tools to reduce stress, build emotional resilience and enhance overall well-being. Each session introduces a new skill – like breathwork, guided meditation or relaxation techniques– designed to increase self-awareness and support everyday life. Participants will explore the benefits of mindfulness in a supportive space while connecting with others on a healing journey.

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program, we are excited to offer our community an Infant CPR class option. 

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification Infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.

Available to cancer survivors at no charge, the Survivorship Program offers semi-monthly workout sessions that will focus on helping you build strength and improve your cardiovascular health through a combination of exercises. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting out, our experienced trainers will guide you every step of the way. Join us for this opportunity to boost your overall health and well-being. 

These sessions will be held by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's Sports Medicine Institute.  

 

Prostate Cancer Screening 

Thursday, Oct. 9, 5:30 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Gaffney  

One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second most common non-skin cancer in the United States. A new case is diagnosed every three minutes, but if caught early enough the 5-year survival rate is 100%. 

Do you qualify for this FREE screening? 

-Are you a man aged 50-70? 

-Have no primary care doctor? 

-Do you not have insurance? 

-Have you not had a PSA draw in the past year? 

If you meet the above criteria, you qualify for this screening. The screening consists of only a blood draw and results are provided in seven to 14 days. Registration is required for this event. 

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care 

Thursday, Oct. 9, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Music Therapy-Cancer Patients and Survivors 

Thursday, Oct. 9, 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center–Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group

Monday, Oct. 13, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg

The Survivorship Program offers a unique, monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another at no charge.  

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg. 

This event will be held in person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg.

Spartanburg Prostate Cancer Support Group

Join us at Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg or online, for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

This month we will be joined by Julia Humphries, Coordinator for the Survivorship Program. Julia will be sharing about the survivorship program, what offerings they have currently, and what the survivorship clinic can do for you. At Gibbs Cancer Center, we consider survivorship to start the day you are diagnosed and begin your cancer journey.

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Eastside YMCA to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension.

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday.

Cardiac Connection-How to Navigate Healthy Holidays

Heart Wellness Center  

October kicks off another holiday season. Join us as our staff discuss ways to move through the holidays, enjoy yourself and make healthy choices for yourself all the while. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us. 

 

Colorful Cooking at Home: Introducing Chef Caroline

We welcome Culinary Educator and Chef Caroline Worthy to the Culinary Medicine Program at Gibbs Cancer Center. Caroline brings years of culinary instruction experience and has helped students and family members alike navigate cooking for health needs.  

Join us to meet Caroline and watch her prepare a delightful dish as she kicks off her first Colorful Cooking at Home. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate, and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be! Join host Culinary Medicine Coordinator and Registered Dietitian Kerri Stewart as she navigates different topics and dishes with the common theme of color.

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents  

Thursday, Oct. 16, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

This class will share information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. This is an online event. You will receive the link to the event after you register. 

 

Weight Loss Surgery-Online Support Group  

Thursday, Oct. 16, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online  

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.   

 

Pelham Medical Center Trunk or Treat  

Saturday, Oct. 18, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

Pelham Medical Center invites families with children ages 12 and under for trunk or treat.  

There will be food trucks, face painting, touch a truck, free entry gift raffles and many trunks for kids to get treats at. 

The event will be held in the parking lot behind Gibbs Cancer Center.

Just the Ticket 

Monday, Oct. 20, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

This is an online event, and you will receive the link once you have registered. 

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle  

Tuesday, Oct. 21, noon to 1 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center or online 

Join us at noon on the third Tuesday of every month for this hybrid (virtual and in-person) support group. Meetings are designed for 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able. This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams. If you would like to come in person, you must call (864-560-6487) or email Madison (mapate@srhs.com) to reserve your seat in the classroom as space is limited.  If you do not contact us directly, a link to the virtual meeting will be sent the day before through your email. 

 

Fall Art Class-Indian Corn Decor-Cancer Survivors 

Tuesday, Oct. 21, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

This session will be hosted by Youmi Efurd from Wofford College.  

 

Prepared: Breastfeeding 

Tuesday, Oct. 21, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Cooking Up Confidence-Virtual Cooking Series  

Thursday, Oct. 23, 5:45 to 7:15 p.m. 

Online Event  

Cook along with various healthcare professionals from Diabetes Education, Food Services, Cardiology, Oncology Support Services and Culinary Medicine from the comfort of your own home. While we have different specialties teaching, these classes are for everyone. 

Cooking Up Confidence is a series of four virtual cooking classes and will cover a variety of different cooking techniques to make home-prepared meals easier and fun. Recipes can be adapted to meet your family's needs. You do not need to attend all four classes.

  • Applies American Heart Association's research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which improves learning and retention
  • Classroom format works well for learners who prefer group interaction and feedback while learning skills
  • Each student receives high-quality course materials for ongoing reference 

This class is appropriate for: 

  • Schools and students
  • Community members interested in learning how to save a life
  • Business leaders not required to have CPR certification for their job 

Each participant will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course. 

**This class is NOT for healthcare providers, daycare providers, preschool teachers or anyone whose employer requires certification. 

 

Veg Edge Potluck

Looking for others on their journey to eating healthier? Do you need some inspiration, or do you want to try new dishes? Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month. 

There is no need to register. Please adhere to WFPBN guidelines (no meat, dairy or oil and minimal added sugar and salt) and bring the recipe to share. Reach out to Lori at lboyd2@srhs.com if you'd like some recommendations about where to find recipe ideas.

Integrated throughout the class are fun activities and video clips that share the relatable stories of real dads and advice from a fatherhood expert. Allow about three hours to complete.

Woven throughout the eClass are fun activities to help you learn and engaging video clips that share the real stories of families with multiples.
