Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has many events to choose from, with something for everyone from childbirth preparation classes to cooking instruction and heart health screenings. Check out what we offer and sign up today.  


Friends and Family CPR Class  

Saturday, Nov. 1, 10 a.m. to noon 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

Features: 

  • Applies American Heart Association's research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which improves learning and retention
  • Classroom format works well for learners who prefer group interaction and feedback while learning skills
  • Each student receives high-quality course materials for ongoing reference

This class is appropriate for: 

  • Schools and students
  • Community members interested in learning how to save a life
  • Business leaders not required to have CPR certification for their job

Each participant will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the course. 

**This class is NOT for healthcare providers, daycare providers, preschool teachers or anyone whose employer requires certification.

Hugh R. Black Building  

The Survivorship Program offers weekly workout sessions that will focus on helping you build strength and improve your cardiovascular health through a combination of exercises. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting out, our experienced trainers will guide you every step of the way. Join us for this opportunity to boost your overall health and well-being. 

This group meets in the Rehabilitative Services department (main entrance, straight back and through rehabilitative services doors). 

These sessions will be led by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's Sports Medicine Institute and are available to cancer survivors at no charge.

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer our community an Infant CPR class option. Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. 

This non-certification Infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to remain independent.  

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Anyone over the age of 50, including those who use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program. 

 

Community Blood Pressure Screening

Eastside YMCA 

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Eastside YMCA to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension.

Cleveland Park Events Center 

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, each Wednesday for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Slips, trips and falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls.  

Registration is not required. Please join us at any session that fits your schedule.  

Beginners are welcome. You must be able to get on and off the floor without assistance.

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through six months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

Complementary medicine in primary care involves integrating non-traditional therapies, like massage or acupuncture, with conventional medical treatments. 

Join us for lunch to hear Misty Sloan, employee health programs coordinator with Spartanburg Regional, explain how self-care aims to address the whole person, including physical, mental and emotional well-being, and share about some of the complementary therapies offered at Spartanburg Regional.

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, at the Gibbs Cancer Center Conference room in Spartanburg to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors. Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, we will provide you with a mat and block to use. 

Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees.

Caroline Worthy, culinary educator, will talk about healthier side dishes and dessert options to help you enjoy holiday meals without feeling stressed or guilty about food. 

 

Stop the Bleed 

Monday, Nov. 10, 10 to 11 a.m. 

Cherokee Public Library-Gaffney 

Spartanburg Medical Center's Trauma Care Services would like you to join them for this important training. 

Minutes count! Someone who is severely bleeding can bleed to death in as little as five minutes. That’s why bleeding control is the purpose of STOP THE BLEED training. The 60-minute formal presentation is followed by hands-on practice to ensure that participants feel confident in their ability to STOP THE BLEED. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid 

Monday, Nov. 10, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg or online 

The Survivorship Program offers a unique, monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another at no charge.  

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg, will lead this support group. 

This event will be held in person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in person, a virtual attendance option is available. 

 

Spartanburg Prostate Cancer Support Group 

Monday, Nov. 10, 5 to 6 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg or online  

Join us at Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg or online, for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

Join us this month as Dr. Jeremy Kilburn, MD, a radiation oncologist with Gibbs Cancer Center, will present. Dr. Kilburn will share a variety of radiation treatment options for prostate cancer patients, including the CyberKnife. Dr. Kilburn will be available to answer any questions about treatment options, side effects and more.  

At Gibbs Cancer Center, we consider survivorship to start the day you are diagnosed and begin your cancer journey. 

The Spartanburg group meets on the first floor in the auditorium.

Music Therapy-Cancer Survivors

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a wide variety of healthcare goals such as promote wellness, manage stress, alleviate pain, express feelings and emotions, enhance memory, improve communication, promote physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. 

This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday. 

 

Pelham Prostate Cancer Support Group 

Tuesday, Nov. 11, 6 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham or online  

Join us at Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham or online, for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow prostate cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through. 

This month we will be joined by Dr. Daniel Fried, MD, PhD, MPH, a radiation oncologist with Gibbs Cancer Center. Dr. Fried will share a variety of radiation treatment options for prostate cancer patients, including the CyberKnife. Dr. Fried will be available to answer any questions about treatment options, side effects and much more.  

At Gibbs Cancer Center, we consider survivorship to start the day you are diagnosed and begin your cancer journey. 

We will meet in demo cooking kitchen on the second floor. 

 

Diabetes Month-Cooking Demo 

Wednesday, Nov. 12, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham  

Cooking healthy meals can be daunting, especially if you are a person with diabetes trying to make healthy choices. Our diabetes care and education specialists are here to help. 

Stacy Eilers, RDN, CDCES, will prepare a simple and delicious hearty pumpkin chili recipe, which is perfect for fall and winter. 

Join us in person or online for this once-a-year event. In person attendees will get to sample the recipe. 

In-person attendees will meet in the Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham teaching kitchen on the second floor. 

 

Art Therapy-Grief Support

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System-Hospice Home 

Art can be a healing tool to give grief a voice when words fail. 

Please join us for art therapy. The type of art will change based on the participation and the skill set of the registrants. No prior art experience is necessary. 

This program is for those who are grieving in our community, and registration is required. There are two sessions-please only register for one. Please email JNelson4@srhs.com after registering for further instructions.

Spartanburg Medical Center 

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Love Your Lungs

Cancer Survivors Park-Greenville 

Join Gibbs Cancer Center's community outreach team at the Cancer Survivors Park. 

Step inside the giant inflatable lung model and see how a healthy lung functions. Learn about lung health, disease prevention and the importance of screening from our community outreach team at this free event. 

 

Colorful Cooking at Home: Savvy Scraps with Christine of Employee Health 

Friday, Nov. 14, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. 

Online Event 

The holidays are just around the corner and apple season has been in full swing. Christine McConnell from Employee Health has found resourceful ways to use various food scraps over the years and is joining us in the kitchen to highlight multiple uses for apple peels and cores. Even you can make your own juice, jelly, or apple cider vinegar. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate, and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be!

Prepared: LAMAZE Childbirth (2-week series) 

Sunday, Nov. 16 and 23, 2 to 6 p.m. 

Lamaze Childbirth education classes at Spartanburg Medical Center serve families no matter what type of birth they are planning for. All classes within the Lamaze Childbirth series present evidence-based information for normal and safe birth, influenced by the Lamaze 6 Healthy Birth Practices. Classes provide in-depth information for expectant families, reducing their fear or anxiety while building confidence and preparing them for birth. 

Please note this class is a two-week series and will meet for two consecutive Sundays from 2-6 p.m. 

Each Lamaze Childbirth Educator is a labor and delivery nurse and is up to date on birthing practices and policies. 

All prenatal education classes at Spartanburg Medical Center include you and a support person with each registration.

Just the Ticket 

Monday, Nov. 17, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

This is an online event, and you will receive the link once you have registered. 

Diabetes Wellness Circle  

 

Tuesday, Nov. 18, noon to 1 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center or online 

Join us at noon on the third Tuesday of every month for this hybrid (virtual and in-person) support group. Meetings are designed for 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able. This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams.  

If you would like to come in person, you must call (864-560-6487) or email Madison (mapate@srhs.com) to reserve your seat in the classroom as space is limited.  If you do not contact us directly, a link to the virtual meeting will be sent the day before through your email.

Tuesday, Nov. 18, 6 to 8 p.m.

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.  

 

Cardiac Connection-Understanding Cardiomyopathy  

Wednesday, Nov. 19, noon to 1p.m. 

Heart Wellness Center  

Cardiomyopathy is a disease of the heart muscle which makes it hard for the heart to pump blood throughout the body. This condition can lead to heart failure. Join us when one of our heart failure experts discusses symptoms, outcomes and treatment options. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one is interested, please join us. 

 

Weight Loss Surgery-Online Support Group  

Thursday, Nov. 20, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online  

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.   

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents  

Thursday, Nov. 20, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

This class will share information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. 

This is an online event. You will receive the link to the event after you register. 

 

Veg Edge Potluck-Cardiology, Chronic Kidney Disease and Fun with Fiber - Alexandra Lautenschlaeger, RD

Looking for others on their journey to eating healthier? Do you need some inspiration or want to try new dishes? Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every 1st Tuesday of the month. 

Social and meal: 5:30 p.m.; program begins at 6 p.m. 

There is no need to register. Please adhere to WFPBN guidelines (no meat, dairy or oil and minimal added sugar and salt) and bring the recipe to share. Reach out to Lori at lboyd2@srhs.com if you'd like some recommendations about where to find recipe ideas.

Integrated throughout the class are fun activities and video clips that share the relatable stories of real dads and advice from a fatherhood expert. Allow about three hours to complete.

Woven throughout the eClass are fun activities to help you learn and engage video clips that share the real stories of families with multiples.
