Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has many events to choose from, with something for everyone from childbirth preparation classes to cooking instruction and heart health screenings. Check out what we offer and sign up today.  
 

Prepared Parents: Infant CPR

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer our community an Infant CPR class option. Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. 

This non-certification Infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.

Get ready to strengthen your body with a mix of strength training and gentle cardio exercises. 

The Survivorship Program is offering weekly workout sessions that will focus on helping you build strength and improve your cardiovascular health through a combination of exercises. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting out, our experienced trainers will guide you every step of the way. Join us for this opportunity to boost your overall health and well-being. 

These sessions will be led by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's Sports Medicine Institute. 

These sessions are available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Balance and Breathe Yoga

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Slips, trips and falls are the leading causes of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls.  

Beginners are welcome. You must be able to get on and off the floor without assistance.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to remain independent.  

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Anyone over the age of 50, including those who use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program. 

 

Community Blood Pressure Screening

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Eastside YMCA to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension. 

 

Cooking for One (Together)

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

Cooking for one can be just as fun! Join us in the teaching kitchen for a hands-on cooking class highlighting tips and recipes just for one. 

Cook along with the Culinary Medicine Program in our teaching kitchen. 

This class will introduce simple, flexible techniques to help make home-prepared meals approachable, enjoyable and supportive of your health. Cooking for one has its hurdles, but it’s also an opportunity to honor food as medicine and invest in your well-being.

Come join the Spartanburg Regional Culinary Medicine Team to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant-Based Nutrition (WFPBN) every first Tuesday of the month. 

Just show up with a dish to share! Please adhere to WFPBN guidelines (no meat, dairy, or oil and minimal added sugar and salt) and bring the recipe to share. Reach out to Chef Caroline at cworthy2@srhs.com if you'd like some recommendations about where to find recipe ideas.

Clergy, staff and emergency team leaders are invited to join us for a day of learning and discussion on how to create a safe and welcoming environment at your place of worship. 

Learn from experts in the field about Daniel's Law (infant safe haven), when and how to administer Narcan and how to use an AED.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, we will provide you with a mat and block to use.

Colorful Cooking at Home: Glowing Skin and Nutrition with VCOM Med Students

The Teaching Kitchen welcomes two medical students from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine this month to talk all foods for skin health and nutrition. The link between what we eat and skin integrity is an underdiscussed topic, yet incredibly important as skin is the body's largest organ. African sweet potato and peanut stew are on the menu today, dishing up naturally high servings of beta-carotene, a phytonutrient that assists with many skin cell functions. 

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be.

Joining our support group this month is Chef Carolina Worthy from the Culinary Medicine Program. Chef Caroline will talk about how nutrition can be a support tool during your cancer journey and how to incorporate nutrition into your life.

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available to you during pregnancy, labor and delivery. 

This in-person class provides the information you need to help reduce anxiety and allow you to have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a fun class that is comprehensive and fact-based. A wide variety of topics pertaining to your baby’s birthday will be covered. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid 

Tuesday, March 10, 5:45 to 7 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg or online 

The Survivorship Program offers a unique, monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another at no charge.  

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg, will lead this support group. 

This event will be held in person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in person, a virtual attendance option is available. 

 

Head and Neck Cancer Support Group 

Wednesday, March 11, 2 to 3:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham  

Have you recently been diagnosed with head and neck cancer? Are you undergoing treatment or are a survivor? 

Join us for our head and neck cancer support group. The group is associated with the Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer. This group is open to anyone at any stage of diagnosis or survivorship. 

Meetings will have in-person and virtual options available and registration is required. 

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care 

Thursday, March 12, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class. 

 

Just the Ticket 

Monday, March 16, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

This is an online event and you will receive the link once you have registered. 

 

Prepared: Breastfeeding In-person 

Tuesday, March 17, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. 

In this class you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding. This class is taught by a Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). 

If you are experiencing financial hardship and do not participate in Medicaid, please call 864-560-BABY (2229) to discuss additional options. 

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle  

Tuesday, March 17, noon to 1 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center or online 

Join us at noon on the third Tuesday of every month for this hybrid (virtual and in-person) support group. Meetings are designed for 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able. This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams.  

If you would like to come in person, you must call (864-560-6487) or email Madison (mapate@srhs.com) to reserve your seat in the classroom as space is limited. If you do not contact us directly, a link to the virtual meeting will be sent the day before through your email. 

 

Cardiac Connection: The Power of Nutrition

Cardiac Connection is a welcoming and interactive opportunity to stay motivated, informed and connected during your heart wellness journey. 

March is National Nutrition Month and Registered Dietitian, Alexandra Lautenschlaeger, will be discussing how to incorporate heart -healthy foods into your diet.

March is National Nutrition Month and Oncology Dietitian Livi Trapp is cooking this month! This year's theme is "Discover the Power of Nutrition”, and the kitchen is the perfect place to start. We'll cover the power of colorful plant foods while preparing a mediterranean bean salad with homemade lemon dijon dressing.

Weight Loss Surgery-Online Support Group

This group provides upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.   

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents  

Thursday, March 19, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. This class will share information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby.

Art Class-Cancer Patients, Survivors and Caregivers

In just a few hours you will learn what’s new, refresh what you already know, and feel more comfortable when called upon to help care for your grandchild.
