Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System offers a variety of events, including childbirth preparation classes, cooking instruction and heart health screenings. Explore our upcoming events and sign up today. 

 

Prepared: LAMAZE Childbirth 

Sunday Aug. 2 and 9, 2 to 6 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Please note this class is a 2-week series and will meet for two consecutive Sundays-Aug. 2 and Aug. 9 from 2 to 6 p.m. 
 
In this class series, you will learn about: 
 
-Lamaze’s sSix healthy birth practices, relaxation exercises 
-Anatomy/physiology of normal and undisturbed birth 
-Techniques for your support person, how to minimize discomforts of labor 
-Communicating with your care provider, along with the benefits and risks of common medical interventions during labor 
-Planning for postpartum, breastfeeding, newborn care and more 
 
Each Lamaze Childbirth Educator is a labor and delivery nurse as well and is up to date on birthing practices and policies. 
 
All Prenatal Education Classes at Spartanburg Medical Center include you and a support person with each registration.

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program, we are excited to offer our community an Infant CPR class option. 

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification Infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to remain independent.  

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Anyone over the age of 50, including those who use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, each Wednesday for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Slips, trips and falls are the leading causes of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls.

Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending, a mat and block will be provided for you to use.

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class.

Gibbs Cancer Center – Pelham  

Cook along with the Culinary Medicine Program and clinicians from Medical Group of the Carolinas Diabetes Education in our teaching kitchen. This is a series of four hands-on cooking classes and will cover a variety of different techniques each class to make home-prepared meals easier, fun and support optimal blood sugar management. 
 
Participants will receive a diabetes-friendly cookbook at the end of the series, which will be celebrated in November for American Diabetes Month. 
 
Please register only if you can commit to all four classes held once per month every second Tuesday, August - November.

In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday. 

 

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg or online 

The Survivorship Program offers a unique, monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another at no charge.  

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg. 

This event will be held in person at Gibbs Cancer Center –Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in person, a virtual attendance option is available for this event. 

 

Head and Neck Cancer Support Group

Have you recently been diagnosed with head and neck cancer? Are you undergoing treatment or are a survivor? 

Join us at Gibbs-Pelham for our head and neck cancer support group. The group is associated with the Support for Oral and Head and Neck Cancer organization. This group is open to anyone at any stage of diagnosis or survivorship. 
 
Meetings will have in-person and virtual options available.

Community Blood Pressure Screening

Middle Tyger YMCA Family Center  

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Middle Tyger YMCA Family Center to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension. 

 

Just the Ticket 

Monday, Aug. 17, 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

 

Diabetes Wellness Circle  

Tuesday, Aug. 18, noon to 1 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center or online 

Join us on the third Tuesday of every month for this hybrid (virtual and in-person) support group. Meetings are designed for 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able. This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams.  

If you would like to come in person, you must call (64-560-6487 or email Madison at mapate@srhs.com to reserve your seat in the classroom as space is limited.  If you do not contact us directly, a link to the virtual meeting will be sent the day before through your email.

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents  

Thursday, Aug. 20, 4 to 5 p.m.

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

This class will share information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby.  

This is an online event.  

 

Skin Cancer Screening

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham is hosting a free skin cancer screening event open to the public. A spot skin cancer screening is fast, easy and pain-free. 
 
This screening is open to those with or without insurance and who are not currently under the care of a dermatologist.

Weight Loss Surgery-Online Support Group  

Thursday, Aug. 20. noon to 1 p.m.

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.   

 

Colorful Cooking at Home: Breakfast Nests with OT Kim Mielke

What do breakfast nests and pelvic floor therapy have in common? Occupational Therapist Kim Mielke from our Oncology Rehab Services is here to cook and chat about that. The foods we put in our bodies have a lot to do with our bowel health and the muscles involved. We're excited for Kim to kick off the re-opening of our teaching kitchen and Colorful Cooking at Home. 
 
Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be. Join host Culinary Medicine Coordinator and Registered Dietitian Kerri Lindberg as she navigates different topics and dishes with the common theme of color.

Gibbs Cancer Center – Pelham is a box pickup site for pre-ordered FoodShare produce boxes provided by Mill Village Farms.
