Gaffney woman’s knee replacement surgery restores hope and healing
Jonquil Stuard still remembers the day in 2020 when her knee gave out and she fell on the job while working in a manufacturing plant.
The Gaffney woman’s right leg had already given her some discomfort, but from the fall it was evident she needed surgery.
“My knee was raggedy. I knew it was the right time for surgery,” Stuard said.
Dr. Frank “Spike” Phillips, with Medical Group of the Carolinas - Cherokee Orthopaedics, previously performed a total knee replacement surgery for her mother, so he was already highly regarded as a trusted orthopaedic surgeon to handle Stuard’s own surgery.
Stuard received a total knee replacement at Cherokee Medical Center just two days after her fall. She pushed through recovery and started walking regularly, starting out with a walker and then a cane. Physical therapists also put her on a healthy treatment plan to get her back to normal life.
“If you don’t get up and shake this off, you’re never going to get better,” Stuard said.
Stuard, 50, has been thankful and healthy ever since Dr. Phillips’ procedure, even five years later.
Her hope has been restored, and she looks forward to keeping up with her children and 4-year-old godson.
“Now I can do whatever I want to do,” she said. “I have my life back and stay busy with my family. I’m so grateful.”
