Family medicine doctor Alyssa Johnson ‘always knew’ patient care was for her

By Staff reports on December 11, 2025

Born and raised in Greenville as the middle child among three girls, Dr. Alyssa Johnson never thought twice about what she would do as an adult.

When her little sister cut her finger in their kitchen, her oldest sister ran away, and Dr. Johnson leaned in for a closer look – an early memory that informed her future aspirations as a physician.

“My parents love telling this story. My oldest sister was running in the opposite direction, and I was up in her face going, ‘This is so cool!’” Dr. Johnson said. “There was never an ‘aha’ moment. It was always kind of there. I just always knew.”

Dr. Johnson, a recent graduate of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System’s Family Medicine Residency program, is now welcoming new patients at Medical Group of the Carolinas – Family Medicine – Converse Heights.

Dr. Johnson believes in empowering her patients to take an active role in their health journeys. She emphasizes that a patient’s overall health and wellness is shaped and influenced by their sense of personal involvement alongside the direction of their physician.

“I'm really into giving patients control over their own medical care,” Dr. Johnson said. “I like to be able to spend time with patients and come to an understanding.”

With more people turning to social media for medical advice, Dr. Johnson focuses on building trust, so patients feel comfortable bringing their questions to her.

“There's so much information out there readily accessible, and patients come in with questions," Dr. Johnson said. “It’s great that something like that can give us a starting place to have a conversation about whatever they’re dealing with.”

Outside of medicine, Dr. Johnson enjoys spending time with her husband and 1-year-old daughter.

Born and raised in Greenville, she feels right at home in the Upstate. Dr. Johnson is an avid crafter, enjoys making homemade sourdough bread and recently poured her creative energy into decor for her daughter’s “one sweet peach” birthday party theme.
