For Dr. Asia Grabska, compassion is the most meaningful part of her work
For Dr. Asia Grabska, the most meaningful part of her work is what she can offer patients on some of the hardest days of their lives: compassion, connection and a real reason for hope. She finds purpose in the relationships she builds and the opportunity to walk alongside patients through challenging moments. She is excited to bring that patient-centered approach to hematology and oncology at Gibbs Cancer Center.
"We can cure cancers. We can make patients' lives better," she said. "The field has changed so much. It's not what people imagine when they hear the word cancer anymore."
Triple board-certified in internal medicine, hematology and medical oncology, Dr. Grabska specializes in the treatment of solid tumors, including breast and lung cancers, as well as benign hematologic conditions such as various forms of anemia. She earned her medical degree from St. George’s University in Grenada, West Indies, completed her residency at the University of Connecticut and pursued her fellowship in hematology and oncology at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, Fla.
Dr. Grabska was drawn to oncology for its unique integration of scientific disciplines and the opportunity to form close, meaningful relationships with patients and their families. These connections remain central to her practice and shape her approach to care.
"It's not just the relationships with the patients; I also cherish the relationships with the families," she said, noting that patients often come with their loved ones.
That relational approach shapes how she practices every day. She prioritizes spending time with patients, walking them through their diagnosis and treatment options in clear, accessible language. By building a strong foundation of understanding and encouraging a collaborative, team-based approach, she empowers patients to take an active role in their care. She believes informed patients are better equipped to make confident decisions.
"A lot of patients don't know what to ask at their first appointment," she said. "My job at that moment in their life is to educate them first, give them the resources they need and answer questions they didn't even know they had."
Dr. Grabska is passionate about the rapidly evolving field of oncology, including advancements in chemotherapy, immunotherapy, personalized medicine, and genetics. She is enthusiastic about offering patients access to these innovative treatment options.
"It used to just be a few drugs," she said. "And now we have chemotherapy, immunotherapy, personalized medicine and genetics."
Outside of her professional work, Dr. Grabska enjoys spending time with her husband and children, and they share a love of travel. She looks forward to building strong relationships with patients and serving the broader Spartanburg community.
