Dr. Amber Childers, DO, grew up in Honea Path and has spent the past six years practicing family medicine in Due West. This setting is where she developed a heart and passion for rural health.

Now, she has joined Cherokee Medical Center – Family Medicine – Grassy Pond in Gaffney to continue serving those in a rural community and bring access to quality care close to home.

“Growing up in a rural area, I’m used to the patient population,” Dr. Childers said. “I’m used to patients not necessarily having the best access to care, so you get more urgent care needs coming in as well. It gets you used to doing that full scope of medicine.”

A passion for medicine since childhood

Dr. Childers completed her family medicine residency with Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System before practicing at Due West Family Medicine.

After her husband took a pastoring job at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Cowpens earlier this year, she and her family moved back to Spartanburg County, where she first received her training.

“Of course, I wanted to go back to Spartanburg Regional because this is where I trained,” she said. “It was well-rounded. I had good training in pediatrics and OB/GYN and taking care of the whole family from newborn babies up through geriatrics.”

Dr. Childers has wanted to be a physician since elementary school and continues that passion today.

“I enjoy the full scope of medicine and getting to know the whole family,” she said. “I focus on treating the whole body and preventative medicine, partnering with them to do what we need to do to keep them healthy.”

It’s important for Dr. Childers’ patients to agree with their treatment plan so that a partnership is formed between her and her patients, she said.

Patients are family

Dr. Childers married her high school sweetheart 14 years ago. She and her husband have two sons, Noah and Titus.

When not caring for patients, she loves traveling, going to the beach, reading, baking and is very involved with her church.

Her favorite experiences with her family include taking trips to Disney World in Florida, Dollywood in Tennessee and Surfside Beach on the South Carolina coast.

“I’m very family-oriented and since family is very important to me, I treat my patients as my own family,” Dr. Childers said.
