Don’t get sick!

By Jessica Pickens on January 18, 2018

It seems like everyone around you is getting sick: from stomach viruses to the flu to terrible colds and sinus infections.

While you try to keep a good grasp on your health, Wayne Davis, MD, of Immediate Care Center—Pelham shares some tips on what he's seeing and how to stay healthy:

What sort of illnesses are you seeing this time of year at Immediate Care Center—Pelham?

In the last few months, we have seen a good bit of gastroenteritis (or stomach flu) and upper respiratory infections, including viral and bacterial, and influenza.

What is your advice to patients who have these illnesses?

Stay hydrated by increasing fluid intake over the course of the illness. If there are any signs or symptoms of dehydration, schedule an appointment with your doctor or visit an Immediate Care Center. Dehydration symptoms include:

  • Dry mouth
  • Change in urination color or frequency
  • Low blood pressure

While you're sick, help protect those around you from your illness. Try not to share food or drinks and wash your hands thoroughly to prevent the spread of germs.  A helpful tip: Sing “Happy Birthday” while washing your hands to ensure you have washed them long enough.

How can people (especially children at school) avoid these illnesses?

Encourage your children to wash their hands at school and not share any food or toys if they are sick. If your child has a fever, keep them home from school so they can get better and so other children aren't infected.

At home, prepare and store your food safely to avoid foodborne illnesses. Also, disinfect surfaces after making food or if people in your home are sick.
