Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System has many events to choose from, with something for everyone from childbirth preparation classes to cooking instruction and heart health screenings. Check out what we offer and sign up today.  
 

Prepared Parents: Infant CPR (In-person)

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support Program, we are excited to offer our community an Infant CPR class option. 

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification Infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.

Cleveland Park Events Center  

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to remain independent.  

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Anyone over the age of 50, including those who use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program. 

 

Community Blood Pressure Screening

Eastside YMCA 

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack. 

Pelham Medical Center partners with Eastside YMCA to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension.

Cleveland Park Events Center

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, each Wednesday for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Slips, trips and falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls.  

Registration is not required. Please join us at any session that fits your schedule.  

Beginners are welcome. You must be able to get on and off the floor without assistance.

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through six months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.  

 

Sarcopenia: Avoiding Muscle Loss as You Age 

Wednesday, Sept. 3, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

Join us for lunch and learn how to stay fit, active and independent longer. 

Rolando Chacon, physical therapist with Outpatient Therapy Services - Pelham, will discuss tips to help combat muscle loss and will demonstrate exercises to keep your muscles strong and healthy as you age. 

 

Grief Support Group

Tyger River Presbyterian Church 

Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System Hospice Home is holding an adult community support group for those grieving the loss of a loved one. Please plan on attending the four-session series of this group.

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher at the Gibbs Cancer Center Conference room in Spartanburg to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors. Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks, and other yoga tools to the class. If this is your first time attending a mat and block will be provided for you to use.  

Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees. 

 

AARP Smart Driver Course  

Saturday, Sept. 6, 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Pelham 

In many states, drivers may benefit from a discount on their auto insurance premium upon completing the course. And you will learn something new along the way. In fact, an evaluation of the course found that 97% of participants changed at least one driving habit because of what they learned. 

Our Smart Driver online course will help you: 

  • Receive a multi-year discount on your auto insurance.* 

  • Refresh your driving skills and your knowledge of the rules — and hazards — of the road. 

  • Reduce your chances of receiving a traffic violation or getting into an accident.

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid

Gibbs Cancer Center – Spartanburg or online 

The Survivorship Program offers a unique, monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another at no charge.  

Research shows that taking part in support groups where you both give and receive help is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a breast cancer diagnosis. 

This support group will be led by Gail Ebert, MMFT, LMFT-A, CAMS-II, CPC of Illuminate Therapy, Spartanburg. 

This event will be held in person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in person, a virtual attendance option is available for this event.

Available to cancer survivors at no charge, the Survivorship Program offers semi-monthly workout sessions that will focus on helping you build strength and improve your cardiovascular health through a combination of exercises. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting out, our experienced trainers will guide you every step of the way. Join us for this opportunity to boost your overall health and well-being. 

These sessions will be held by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's Sports Medicine Institute.  

 

Music Therapy-Cancer Patients and Survivors 

Tuesday, Sept. 9, noon to 1 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center–Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy. 

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy. 

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

 

Prepared: Breastfeeding

Tuesday, Sept. 9, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding.

 

Prostate Cancer Screening 

Thursday, Sept. 11, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center Spartanburg  

One in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, the second most common non-skin cancer in the United States. A new case is diagnosed every 3 minutes, but if caught early enough the 5-year survival rate is 100%. 

Do you qualify for this FREE screening? 

-Are you a man aged 50-70 

-Have no primary care doctor 

-Do not have insurance 

-Have not had a PSA draw in the past year 

If you meet the above criteria, you qualify for this screening. The screening consists of only a blood draw and results are provided in seven-14 days. Registration is required for this event. 

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care 

Thursday, Sept. 11, 6 to 8 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center 

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class.

Diabetes Wellness Circle  

Tuesday, Sept. 16, noon to 1 p.m. 

Spartanburg Medical Center or online 

Join us at noon on the third Tuesday of every month for this hybrid (virtual and in-person) support group. Meetings are designed for 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able. This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams. If you would like to come in person you must call (864-560-6487) or email Madison (mapate@srhs.com) to reserve your seat in the classroom as space is limited.  If you do not contact us directly, a link to the virtual meeting will be sent the day before through your email.

Cardiac Connection-Fall Prevention

Heart Wellness Center  

September brings the first day of Fall, which happens to mark the start of Falls Prevention Awareness Week. Join us as movement expert, TJ Mack, shares ways to strengthen your muscles, including the heart, to prevent falls. 

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend! 

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us. 

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents  

Thursday, Sept 18. 4 to 5 p.m. 

Online 

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries. 

This class will share information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight. 

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby. This is an online event. You will receive the link to the event after you register. 

 

Weight Loss Surgery-Online Support Group  

Thursday, Sept. 18, noon to 1 p.m. 

Online  

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend. 

 

Apnea Support Group 

Thursday, Sept. 18, 6 to 7 p.m. 

Heart Center Auditorium  

Join our Apnea support group. This is a safe space to meet other people who currently use PAP therapy, have been advised to use PAP therapy or would like to try PAP therapy again. Come and talk about any concerns, ask questions or even share tips that have been helpful in your PAP journey. 

Registered sleep technicians and our sleep navigator will be available to answer questions and help with masks. We encourage you to bring your bed partner, family member, or caregiver that is helping you be successful on therapy. 

This group will meet quarterly and there are in-person and virtual options available. 

 

Financial Health 101: Lunch and Learn

Join us for a free financial literacy class, hosted by Truist Bank. 

Learn practical tips on managing expenses, budgeting, and planning for the future. This class is open to anyone interested in improving their financial skills. Just the Ticket 

Monday, Sept. 22, 4 to 5 p.m.

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road. 

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations. 

This is an online event, and you will receive the link once you have registered. 

 

Tree Painting Art Class-Cancer Survivors  

Tuesday, Sept 23, 6 to 7:30 p.m. 

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while creating art projects. This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge. 

This session will be hosted by Youmi Efurd, from Wofford College.  

 

Mindful Based Stress Relief Lunch & Learn-Cancer Patients and Survivors  

Thursday, Sept. 25, noon to 1:30 p.m. 

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg  

This free, six-session group offers cancer patients and survivors practical mindfulness tools to reduce stress, build emotional resilience, and enhance over well-being. Each session introduces a new skill- like breathwork, guided meditation, or relaxation techniques- designed to increase self-awareness and support everyday life. Participants will explore the benefits of mindfulness in a supportive space while connecting with others on a healing journey.

Class topics vary and will be led by Pelham Medical Center's clinical nutrition manager, Jennifer Almy, MS, RD, LD. 

September’s topic will be super foods. Take a detailed look at nutrient-dense, minimally processed foods that are packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. 

 

Paper Marbling Art Class-Cancer Survivors

Integrated throughout the class are fun activities and video clips that share the relatable stories of real dads and advice from a fatherhood expert. Allow about three hours to complete.

Woven throughout the e-class are fun activities to help you learn and engaging video clips that share the real stories of families with multiples.
