Improving heart wellness through service

By Jessica Pickens on February 6, 2017

Harrison Chapman moved to Spartanburg in 1950 when she married Robert Hett Chapman, Jr. And over the next 60 years, she dedicated her life to community service, philanthropy and volunteerism in the Spartanburg community.

“She was always busy, always helping someone,” her son Rob Chapman said.

In 1991, Harrison Chapman joined the first Spartanburg Regional Foundation Board of Trustees, and her support of the hospital system ranged from financial donations to giving generously of her time.

“They would say no moss grows under her feet,” her son John Chapman said.

In honor of her service in the community, her children Rob, John and Sadie created the Harrison Chapman Fund after Harrison passed away in 2014. The Harrison Chapman Fund is used to improve the health and wellness of heart patients through efforts that will directly impact their care, quality of life and overall health.

Specifically, the fund helps patients who can't afford the cardiac rehab, which is a medically monitored fitness and wellness program. Typically, 12-16 patients per month qualify for the Harrison Chapman Fund to receive financial assistance for cardiac rehab.

“I think this cardiac rehab is a wonderful program,” patient Jim Cantrell said. “This is my fifth time attending class and I have already seen improvement. I started on the treadmill at three miles per hour and now I have reached five miles per hour. I enjoy the treadmill. I was a runner before my operation.”

The Chapman Fund provides education and lifestyle modifications to patients at Spartanburg Regional.
