Strength Training and Gentle Cardio-Cancer Survivors

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

The Survivorship Program is offering semi-monthly workout sessions that will focus on helping you build strength and improve your cardiovascular health through a combination of exercises. Whether you're a fitness enthusiast or just starting out, our experienced trainers will guide you every step of the way. Join us for this opportunity to boost your overall health and well-being.

These sessions will be led by Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System's Sports Medicine Institute. These sessions are available to cancer survivors at no charge.

Prepared Parents: Infant CPR

In collaboration with our March of Dimes NICU Family Support program, we are excited to offer an infant CPR class to our community. 

Infant CPR offers lifesaving safety information. This non-certification infant CPR class is designed specifically for expectant parents. Our essential hands-on class provides the skills and confidence to turn a life-threatening situation into a lifesaving one. Come gain the confidence, skills and knowledge essential to saving an infant's life.

Cleveland Park Events Center 

Falls in people ages 65 and older are among the most common injuries in that age population. As a result, many seniors are unable to live an independent lifestyle.

The Stay Active and Independent for Life (SAIL) program is a free fall prevention program that includes a one-hour, twice-per-week group fitness class where all participants work at their own pace. Any person over the age of 50, including those that use walkers or canes, can participate in the SAIL program.

 

Union Medical Center Community Tours

Tuesday, Feb. 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Be one of the first people to see the new Union Medical Center before it opens for patients on Feb. 11.

See behind the scenes with a guided tour, check out your new doctor's office and learn all about what this state-of-the-art facility has to offer for all Union County residents.

Cancer Support Group: Hybrid

Tuesday, Feb. 4, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg or online 

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to all cancer patients and survivors at no charge.

Research shows that taking part in support groups, where you both give and receive help, is an effective way to reduce the stress and anxiety that can come with a cancer diagnosis. This support group will be led by Jen Arsenault, LCSW, LISW-CP of Therapeutic Alliance, LLC, Boiling Springs, SC.

This event will be held in-person at Gibbs Cancer Center in Spartanburg. If you are unable to attend in-person, a virtual attendance option is available for this event. Please email survivorshipprogram@gibbscc.org to receive the link to attend virtually.

 

Balance and Breathe Yoga

Cleveland Park Events Center

Join Carolyn Bailey, Trauma Injury Prevention Coordinator, each Wednesday, for Balance and Breathe Yoga. Falls are the leading cause of injury for older adults. This class is designed to help prevent the process of deterioration and loss of muscle mass that can lead to falls.

Beginners are welcome. You must be able to get on and off the floor without assistance.

Know Your Genes: Understanding Genetic Counseling

 Wednesday, Feb. 5, noon to 1 p.m.

Genetic counseling is the process of helping individuals and families affected by or at risk for genetic disorders understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease. Genetic counselors have advanced training in medical genetics and counseling to help individuals and families with this information.

Please join us for lunch to hear Bridgette Aufmuth, certified oncology genetic counselor with Gibbs Cancer Center - Pelham, share information about various genetic counseling specialties, how genetic testing is conducted, and whether genetic testing might be a good option for you.

A certified lactation specialist facilitates an open, supportive forum to talk about the challenges and joys of breastfeeding in a casual gathering for breastfeeding moms and babies from birth through 6 months. Meet other mothers, discuss concerns and learn tips on breastfeeding and life with a new baby.

Gibbs Cancer Center-Spartanburg 

Join Dr. Janet LeFrancois, a certified yoga therapist and Iyengar yoga teacher, at the Gibbs Cancer Center Conference room in Spartanburg to practice basic to advanced yoga with a focus on cancer patients and survivors. Attendees are welcome to bring their own mats, blocks and other yoga tools to the class. 

If this is your first time attending, a mat and block are provided for your use. Registration is required so that we can make space for all attendees.

 

3rd Annual Structural Heart Symposium

Saturday, Feb. 8. 4 to 9 p.m.

Citizens and Southern Event Center 

Incredible advancements in technology have now made it possible for many people with structural heart disease to be treated with minimally invasive procedures that offer lower risk, less trauma and a faster recovery. Join us for this continuing education program and learn how to identify clinical presentations of structural heart disease, as well as the latest treatment options available.

Target Audience:

Physicians (hospitalists, family medicine, internal medicine, anesthesiologists), nurse practitioners, physician assistants and cardiology nurses.

The Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System designates this live activity for a maximum of 3.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) ™. Physicians should claim only credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nearly half of American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases your risk for serious health problems, including stroke and heart attack.

Pelham Medical Center partners with Senior Action Greenville to offer free blood pressure screenings. In addition to having your blood pressure checked, you will receive a tracking card to help keep up with your numbers plus education about what the numbers mean and ways to control hypertension.

 

Spartanburg Prostate Cancer Support Group – Hybrid

Breast Cancer Support Group - Hybrid

The Survivorship Program offers a monthly opportunity for breast cancer patients and survivors to connect with one another. This unique offering is available to breast cancer patients and survivors at no charge.

Join us at Gibs Cancer Center - Pelham or online, for learning opportunities and time to talk with fellow prostate cancer patients and survivors. Our support group is a safe place to discuss your cancer diagnosis and what you are going through.

We will meet in demo cooking kitchen on the second floor.

 

Music Therapy

Thursday, Feb. 13, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Gibbs Cancer Center - Spartanburg

The Survivorship Program offers monthly opportunities for survivors to fellowship with one another while engaging in music therapy.

Music therapy interventions can target a variety of healthcare goals such as promoting wellness, managing stress, alleviating pain, expressing feelings and emotions, enhancing memory, improving communication, promoting physical rehabilitation, sensory processing and more. This session will be hosted by Carolina Music Therapy.

This unique offering from the Survivorship Program is available to cancer survivors at no charge.

 

Safe Kids 101 for New and Expecting Parents 

Thursday, Feb. 13, 4 to 5 p.m.

Online

This one-hour webinar includes safety topics that will help you keep your child safe and avoid accidents and injuries.

Class information includes information about basic car seat features, installation techniques and how to choose an appropriate car seat based on your child's age, height and weight.

Learn ways to avoid accidents in the home involving fire, burns, drowning, falls, and poisonings. Know how to identify safe and unsafe sleep environments for your baby.

This is an online event. You will receive the link to the event after you register.

 

Prepared Parents: Infant Care  

Thursday, Feb. 13, 6 to 8 p.m.

Spartanburg Medical Center

This course prepares expectant parents for their baby's arrival. Topics include breastfeeding, diapering, bathing, and medical and safety information. A local pediatrician and a perinatal educator will lead this class.

 

Colorful Cooking with Cardiology: Brunch Bowls with Dr. and Mrs. Mobley

Saturday, Feb. 15, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

This Heart Month, we've got Dr. Joseph Mobley and his wife Karen, former registered dietitian, in the kitchen to cook cardiac-friendly and colorful brunch! Substituting sweet potatoes for regular potatoes in a breakfast bowl adds a pop of color and fiber boost perfect for managing cholesterol and blood sugar. Join in to see how easy it can be!

Adding color to your plate with plant foods is one of the most effective ways to feel your best. Colorful Cooking at Home is designed to inspire, educate, and showcase how simple and delicious dishes can be! Join host Registered Dietitian Kerri Stewart from the Joe R. Utley Heart Resource Center each month as she navigates different topics and dishes with the common theme of color.

Just the Ticket

Monday, Feb. 17, 4 to 5 p.m.

During this comprehensive course, offered by Spartanburg Medical Center and Safe Kids of the Piedmont, you will learn about South Carolina's child passenger safety laws, the safest way to secure your child in a vehicle, proper car seat installation, when to update or replace your child's car seat and other safety tips to help keep your child safe on the road.

Attendees who have violations of the child passenger occupant law on their records can receive a certificate of completion as proof of participation. This class is only offered once for child passenger occupant violations.

Diabetes Wellness Circle 

Tuesday, Feb. 18, noon to 1 p.m.

Spartanburg Medical Center or online

Join us at noon on the third Tuesday every month for this hybrid (virtual & in-person) support group. Meetings are designed to have 30-45 minutes of education followed by 15-30 minutes of discussion. Please join the meeting then stay as long as you are able.

This is a hybrid meeting, so you may come in person or join us virtually through Microsoft Teams. If you would like to come in person you must call or email Madison to reserve your seat in the classroom- space is limited. Contact mapate@srhs.com or call 864-560-6487. If you do not contact us directly, a link to the virtual meeting will be sent the day before through your email.

 

Monogram Journal Lettering Art Class- Cancer Survivors

This session will be hosted by Youmi Efurd, from Wofford College.

Prepared Breastfeeding 

Tuesday, Feb. 18, 6 to 8 p.m.

Spartanburg Medical Center

Our breastfeeding class is an in-depth introduction that includes the benefits of breastfeeding for mom and baby. In this class, you will learn about milk production, feeding cues, latching techniques, milk storage and problem-solving tips for successful breastfeeding. 

 

Cardiac Connection – Poems from the Heart

Wednesday, Feb. 19, noon to 1 p.m.

Heart Wellness Center

Poetry has the power to improve health by providing an outlet to process emotions, reduce stress, improve mood and boost brain function. These outcomes help with mental health conditions, like depression and anxiety. Engaging with poetry also connects us to others, past and present, who share similar experiences. Studies also show it can help reduce pain and increase hope in patients facing heart disease and other chronic illnesses. Join us as we explore poetry through your own writing, or simply enjoying the words of others.

Cardiac Connection is a monthly community group that supports people of all ages who have experienced a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, had surgery related to the heart or are at risk for heart disease. Relevant topics and speakers vary each month. Bring your lunch and a friend!

In addition, we offer encouragement and lifestyle improvement activities. You may also connect with others who have had similar experiences. If you or a loved one are interested, please join us.

 

Weight Loss Surgery - Online Support Group   

Thursday, Feb. 20, noon to 1 p.m.

Online 

This group provides Upstate area support for patients in all phases of the weight loss surgery process. Combined with the help of friends and family members, this support group allows you to network with others who have experienced similar challenges and lifestyle changes after weight loss surgery. Patients who have not yet had surgery are encouraged to attend.

 

Prepared: Maternity Tour 

Monday, Feb. 24, 6 to 6:45 p.m.

This guided tour provides expectant parents an opportunity to become familiar with the labor and delivery unit, as well as the mother/baby units at Spartanburg Medical Center. All questions are welcomed. Please plan to meet us in the main hospital lobby at the information desk.

Prepared Childbirth   

Thursday, Feb. 27, 6 to 8 p.m.

Spartanburg Medical Center 

Learn everything you need to know about the childbirth process and the options available during pregnancy, labor and delivery. In this class, we provide the information you need to reduce anxiety and help you have a more positive birth experience. Prepared Childbirth is a comprehensive, fact-based and fun class covering various topics about your baby's birthday. 

 

Veg Edge Potluck

Come join us to learn about the benefits of Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition every first Tuesday of the month.

No need to register. Just show up with a dish to share! Please adhere to WFPBN guidelines (no meat, dairy or oil and minimal added sugar and salt) and bring the recipe to share. Reach out to Lori at lboyd2@srhs.com if you'd like some recommendations about where to find recipe ideas.
