The greatest service
If he was 18, Kevin Siegmund would enlist in the military again.
Siegmund, who now works in Information Technology at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System (SRHS), retired from the United States Army in 2005 after serving for 21 years. He served in five overseas assignments, including Turkey, Iraq and in Asia.
“At some point, all veterans signed a blank check to our nation and we weren't really sure what it was for until we were in the middle of it,” Siegmund said. “That takes an element of courage that I greatly respect.”
Siegmund is one of more than 250 veterans who work or volunteer throughout Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. These associates are being honored during a Veterans Day ceremony and luncheon on Friday, Nov. 11, at Spartanburg Medical Center.
“Throughout our country's history, brave men and women have answered the call of duty to defend our nation,” said Bruce Holstien, CEO of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System. “Veterans Day is a time to remember and pay tribute to the men and women of the U.S. armed forces. As American's we owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to our veterans, who during peace or war, have demonstrated steadfast commitment guarding our cherished principals. Many of our SRHS family have served in the military, and I would like to extend my personal thanks to all of you for your courage and service. We are grateful.”
Originally commemorated as Armistice Day, the holiday marked the end of World War I. The Allies and Germany signed the armistice officially ending the war on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918.
Tim Fagan, a veteran of the Marines and Air Force who works in SRHS's quality department, especially remembers those who fought in World War I.
“On Veterans Day, I think of how the day originated. The United States joined the war because they had a sense of duty to the world, though we weren't in imminent danger,” Fagan said.
SRHS civilian associates also took time to thank veterans.
“Veterans Day is an amazingly special day set aside to thank our veterans — actually they are heroes,” said Tiffany Wilson, who works on 5South at Spartanburg Medical Center. “We're able to thank them for dedicated their lives for us without asking for anything in return; all for our freedom and democracy.”
What our veterans and associates said:
“I was part of the Army Nurse Corps, where I had the honor of caring for our veterans and preserving the fighting force. Your work as a nurse is the same as a civilian, but you're a soldier first. It's important to remember veterans every day, not just on Veterans Day.”
–Tammy Tackett, Cardiology
“I am retired from the United State Air Force and am proud to say that I'm a Vietnam Veteran. Veterans Day is a privilege that all Americans should participate in. We live in a country that anyone would say is the freest country in the world, and we should protect those rights. I would say thank you to fellow veterans from the bottom of my heart. Whatever branch of service, we're all one brother and sisterhood with one goal in mind: to protect our freedoms and rights of this county.”
–Bob Forward, Security
“I was in the Army for four years and was stationed at Fort Bragg. My husband was also stationed at Fort Bragg and he retired four years ago. I have a daughter who is nearing the end of her National Guard duty and determining what she wants to do next. The military is a family tradition.”
–Suzanne Sutton, Resource Pool
“I served in the United States Army with two deployments, and my father was in the 82nd Airborne Division. Freedom isn't free, and on Veterans Day we thank those who put their lives on the line.”
–Tracey Graham, Information Services
“I served in the United States Army and I was stationed at Fort Bragg and in Germany. I worked in personnel, which has translated to a position here at SRHS. The best thing I learned, other than being dedicated to what you do, is team building. We worked together, and one man didn't stop the show.”
–Kimberly Westley, Supervisor of Patient Access Account
“On Veterans Day, I remember the sacrifices that my family and other members of the military have made so that we can live in such a great nation.”
–Eric Longino, Human Resources
Spartanburg Regional honors the sacrifices of all who have served our country, and is thankful to those veterans who chose to continue their service as part of our staff.
