When the word “cancer” is mentioned, visions of hospital beds and overnight stays come to mind.

However, cancer treatment has migrated to an outpatient setting over the last 20 years, including infusion treatments such as chemotherapy. Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute, a division of Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System, focuses on providing a comfortable, convenient and calming place for patients during an already difficult time.

Gibbs recently made cancer treatment more convenient by extending outpatient infusion services to Cherokee County through Gibbs Cancer Center & Research Institute—Gaffney.

“We continue to support the Gaffney community by providing additional services close to home,” said David Church, PhD, Vice President of Oncology and Support Services for Gibbs. “By providing infusion services closer to home, patients will be able to resume their normal lifestyle and work activities sooner.”

Gibbs at Gaffney includes seven newly renovated infusion bays with a hematology/oncology physician and nurse practitioner on site every day. The care team in the new Gibbs Infusion Center focuses on making patients as comfortable as possible during their treatment sessions.

“There is already added stress when a patient is seriously ill or has a chronic condition,” said Lynn Foster, director of Medical Group of the Carolinas—Hematology Oncology. “The infusion center allows patients to be flexible with their schedules and maximize time for their daily life activities.”

The new center will treat patients with both chemotherapy and non-chemotherapy medications, as directed by their physician, through intravenous lines and catheters which administer medicine directly into the bloodstream.

• Remicade for Crohn's Disease and rheumatoid arthritis
• Solu-medrol infusions
• Lasix, potassium chloride and magnesium sulfate infusions
• Intravenous hydration
• Iron infusions

• Osteoporosis infusions
• Maintenance injections, including Prolia and Xolair
• Vaccines
